  • Snowfall in Almaty, Kazakhstan

My first sight of falling snow in Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan! It was an awe-inspiring sight with so much snow falling throughout this winter day. As someone who hails from a tropical climate, the snow-covered streets were so pretty and enchanting and it was so fun to navigate my way through the fresh snow! The next day, when the snow started to melt, was quite a different story with muddy puddles and slippery patches everywhere! Anyhow, I enjoyed my first taste of snow in this enchanting city. Almaty - 2 February, biathlete Galina Vishnevskaya won Kazakhstan’s second gold at the Universiade in Almaty 1. Galina Vishnevskaya (Kazakhstan) – 21:43.1 (1 penalty lap) 2. Yana Bondar (Ukraine) – 22:05.9 (2) 3. Anastasiya Egorova (Russia) – 22:19.8 (1) The women’s 7.5km sprint race was the first to be held during the second competition day at the Universiade. During the race leaders kept changing at each point while the main favorites were the last to start the race. Kazakhstan’s Galina Vishnevskaya was one of them. Fans expected only a victory from her. At the first shooting round she had one missed target and because of that was in seventh place. At the second shooting round Vishnevskaya was able to recover, did not miss a single target and raced to the best finish of the race. All biathletes, who crossed the finish line after the Kazakh athlete, did their best to beat Vishnevskaya but could not. Yana Bondar was the closest trailing by 22 seconds. Russia’s Anastasiya Egorova finished third. Although there were biathletes still running the course, it was clear that nobody else would be able to finish in the top three. Galina Vishnevskaya became the champion at the Universiade winning her first gold medal at the World Winter Student Games. She had already had 2 silver medals in her trophy case. - I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all fans for their support at the stadium, - Vishnevskaya said after the race. – The fans are really passionate about biathlon, some people came here all the way from Germany to support me. Today I really tried to correct those errors that I made in the previous race. I made them while skiing and managed to avoid them today but I cannot say it was a perfect race as I did have one missed target. Yana Bondar, the silver medal winner, was also happy with her performance: - I am happy that I won a medal. I came to the Universiade after competing at the European Championships, where I took part in individual and sprint races. The course was well prepared and I am happy with my result. As for the third medal winner, Anastasiya Egorova, she said that she did not have any problems with adjusting to the weather: - I felt very good on the course despite the drops in altitude. I did not even notice how I adjusted to the weather. We prepared for the Universiade in Murmansk in the middle altitude. Stay tuned with FISU and follow us on our different social platforms! ALMATY – 8 February, Russia and Kazakhstan faced-off for the gold medal game, while Canada took on Czech Republic for the bronze. Prior to the start of the 28th World Winter Universiade, both finalists were considered to be contenders of this ice hockey tournament. At the previous Winter Universiade in 2015, in Granada, Spain, Russia and Kazakhstan also made it to the final with Russia beating Kazakhstan 3:1. Today we saw a repeat, although the score was different. In the first period, the host team dominated the ice and created many opportunities but all were stopped by some stellar goaltending of Russian goalie Andriukhov. Having some extra momentum due to a number of powerplays, even a 5-3 situation, the Kazakhs could not score. Sergey Kudryavtsev, the goaltender of Team Kazakhstan had plenty of work too. In the second period he was constantly torpedoed by the Russians. The ‘Red Machine’ constantly attacked the Kazakh goal. In the second period, Team Russia gradually took over the game pushing the host team in a more defensive role. However, the Kazakhs managed to successfully defend their goal. And then it happened. Right at the beginning of the third period, at the 42nd minute. Daniil Ilin netted the puck for Russia. After the goal, Russia closed ranks and Kazakhstan had difficulties to penetrate the Russian wall. Two minutes before the end of the game, Coach Sergey Starygin pulled his goalie for a sixth player. However, the Russian team kept the pressure on and nearly scored an empty netter. While the clock kept ticking towards the end buzzer, the Russians played it cool and pocketed the gold, leaving silver for host team Kazakhstan. Final score: 0:1 (0:0, 0:0, 0:1). In the bronze medal game, Canada and Czech Republic played a very tight match, a genuine thriller. Although Canada led 3-1 after 20 minutes, the Czechs built up their game which resulted in a 4-3 after two periods, and the Canadians were hanging on for dear life in the third. Canadian goalie Auger had to make a number of key stops in the third as the Czechs were desperately looking for the equalizer, including back-to-back incredible pad saves four minutes in. Canada was caught with too many men on the ice with 7:18 remaining but managed to weather the ensuing Czech storms. The Canadians thought they had put the game away in the final minute but had an empty-net goal disallowed when the linesman made a close offside call. In the end, the call didn’t hurt the Canadians, who froze the puck along the board in their own zone in the final seconds to seal the victory and claiming the bronze. Final score: 4-3 (3-1; 1-2; 0-0). Stay tuned with FISU and follow us on our different social platforms! FROM ARMENIA TO KAZAKHSTAN (ALMATY) THROUGH GEORGIA Last week, we did enjoy our last few days in the Caucasus before flying to Kazakhstan. We needed to stay a few more days there in order to catch our flight. We chose Yerevan and Tbilisi to get a final taste of Armenia and Georgia. On our 79th day, we landed in Almaty Kazakhstan. Before any visit to the city, we headed to the Uzbek consulate to sort out our Visas. It proved to be an adventure: we left the hotel under the sun and after 30 minutes of walk, we got caught by a storm. We found shelter in a nearby commercial centre. After one hour, the storm was still there. The clock was ticking, the embassy is opened for Visa only between 3pm and 6pm. So we decided to walk the remaining few kilometers under the strong rain. Bad luck again, one of the street was more a river than a street and it was impossible to cross it without some heavy duty boots. So we took a nearby bus (not really knowing were it was heading) to cross the street. The bus took us closer to the consulate and we could walk the remaining kilometer. At the end, and after quite some waiting there we got our Visas! Almaty is a big modern city. The infrastructures are pretty good, the sidewalks are in good shape, there are lot of buses (without any map though) and restaurants and cafes on almost every blocks. It was also a long time that we didn’t feel on the bottom of the social scale when it comes to crossing a road. Here drivers will stop and let you pass (like at home). On the weather side, it’s either very hot or raining a lot. And on the food side, so far so good, we tried some of the local specialities and enjoyed them. The only difficulty is to order something without horse meet (the menus are often in Russian and Kazakh only). WE DID SPECIFICALLY ENJOY Yerevan: The FIRM barber shop where the owner offers you Whisky while taking care of your pilosity. Tbilisi: The MOMA (museum of modern art) with their permanent exibition on Zurab Tsereteli, a famous Georgian artist. Almaty: The center for ecotourism in Almaty who helped us organise a week “off the beaten path” in Kazakhstan. ACCOMMODATIONS Yerevan: Hotel Tigran Mets in Yerevan. A very good alternative to hostels if you are looking for a double room in the very city center (with almost the same price). Almaty: Sky hostel located on the last floor of a building, the hostel is calm, clean and staff is very friendly. BEST KEPT SECRET TIP There are two useful android apps in Almaty. Google translate where you can download languages for offline usage. With it you can then take pictures of the menu in a restaurant, get the translated version and make sure your are not ordering horse kidneys or mutton brain. The other useful app (for Almaty only) is citybus.kz. This is the only way we found to have all the buses maps. Since Almaty is rather big, walking is not always an option here. This app did prove to be convenient for us to come back to the hostel quite a few times.

Almaty - February 3 - In men’s biathlon pursuit, Russian athletes took all the top places 1 Gold: Sergey Korastylev (Russia) – 32:08.3 (0 penalty laps) 2 Silver: Dmitriy Ivanov (Russia) – 32:19.2 (3) 3 Bronze: Semen Suchilov (Russia) – 32:26.9 (2) On February 3, two sets of medals were awarded in men’s biathlon. The main competition was between Semen Suchilov, Dmitriy Ivanov and Sergey Korastylev. All three athletes have already won medals in this year’s Universiade. Suchilov was the first to start being the winner of sprint. Some aspects of the race were changed because of the weather. Before the start of the race, it began raining. Soon it became chilly and foggy. The trail became icy and slippery. Places in top three were defined by the shooting round. Korastylev hit all the targets and was first to finish. Ivanov followed him in 11 seconds. Semen Suchilov was final in top three. Another Russian athlete, Eduard Latypov, came fourth. Among the Kazakhstani athletes, Anton Panov was the quickest. He came seventh. Roman Yeryomin and Vassiliy Podkorytov were number eight and nine respectively. Not all the athletes finished the race successfully. 15 of them were terminated early because of an increasing time gap. After the flower ceremony, the winners commented on the results of the race. All athletes frowned about the weather. Dmitriy Ivanov, however, liked such weather. Sergey Korastylev was surprised with his physical form. “Everyone needs time to get used to the climate. I usually feel better only after eight days. I had expected the previous days to be difficult. Surprisingly, I felt all right,” he said. “Sergey will probably be the fastest in mass start,” said Suchilov jokingly. Now the athletes are waiting for mixed relay and mass start.
